Driving test fees: what you pay and what is separate
Check official GB and Northern Ireland car test fees, separate tuition and car-use costs, and plan for changes or retests without misleading totals.

For a standard car test booked through GOV.UK in Great Britain, the theory fee is £23 and the practical fee is £62 on weekdays or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. These are government test fees, not a complete price for learning to drive. The official fee page was checked on 16 October 2026; confirm the displayed price before paying.
The distinction matters when comparing a test appointment with an instructor's test-day package. One buys an examination; the other may include tuition time, transport or use of a car. This guide separates those costs so you can ask useful questions and avoid treating an incomplete total as your whole budget.
The standard GB car-test charges
- Theory: £23, including the multiple-choice and hazard-perception parts.
- Practical on a weekday: £62.
- Practical in the higher-priced appointment periods: £75.
GOV.UK classifies tests from 4:30pm onwards as evening tests. Centres do not necessarily offer evening and weekend appointments all the time. The booking system shows what is available; paying a higher fee is not a way to guarantee a particular date.
For one theory attempt and one practical attempt, the official fees therefore total £85 with a weekday practical or £98 with a higher-priced practical. These are simple sums of the published charges, not predictions of what an individual learner will spend.
Different categories and extended tests have different fees. Check the relevant entry if you are not taking the ordinary car test; do not use this article's headline amounts for an instructor, motorcycle, bus or lorry examination.
What the test fee does not tell you
A government appointment fee does not explain the arrangement for the car you will use or any tuition around the appointment. Ask your instructor for a clear description of what their separate charge covers.
Useful questions include:
- Does the quote include a warm-up lesson, and how much time?
- Does it cover use of the tuition car during the test?
- What collection and return arrangements are included?
- What happens if the appointment changes or the instructor cannot provide the car?
- Are there conditions about readiness or permission to use the vehicle?
Do not assume all providers package these items in the same way. A lower headline figure can exclude something another quote includes. Compare the actual service and its terms rather than just the number next to “test day”.
Our driving courses describe tuition options. Contact Learn and Drive for the arrangements relevant to your area and course; this article does not quote an unverified school test-day price.
If you are comparing tuition in Coventry, Exeter, Reading or Dundee, use the local guides to prepare your enquiry. Separate those individually confirmed lesson arrangements from the standard GB examination fees above: a different city does not turn an instructor's package into a government charge.
Retests should have a separate budget line
GOV.UK says you pay the full test fee again when you do not pass and book another attempt. That is separate from any further tuition or another car-use arrangement.
For a planning exercise, write down three headings: government test fees, tuition and vehicle arrangements, and travel or other personal costs. Under each, record only figures you have confirmed. This avoids accidentally counting a package twice or leaving out a second test-day charge.
Preparing a contingency is not a prediction that you will fail. It simply stops an unexpected result becoming a rushed financial decision. Read our test-day checklist to reduce avoidable preparation problems, while remembering that no checklist or paid course guarantees a pass.
Changing a date can affect the amount
The GB practical-test change guidance currently requires ten full working days' notice for a free car-test change. Monday to Saturday count, but Sundays and public holidays do not. Moving to a more expensive appointment means paying the difference; moving to a cheaper one results in a refund of the difference.
Theory appointments have a different notice rule. Do not apply the practical period to theory or assume that every “driving test” page means the same examination. Use the service for your actual booking and read the deadline in its confirmation or booking record.
Also check your instructor's separate cancellation terms. Changing the government appointment does not automatically move a lesson, cancel a vehicle reservation or tell the school that your plans have changed. Confirm both arrangements before treating the new date as settled.
Northern Ireland fees are different
The DVA fee schedule lists the Northern Ireland car theory test at £23, the weekday practical at £65, and the evening/weekend practical at £95. One theory and one practical attempt therefore total £88 or £118 respectively, before tuition, travel and vehicle arrangements.
DVA says booking directly incurs no additional administration or booking fee. Use Northern Ireland's own appointment and change services; a GB price or cancellation rule should not be carried across simply because the test category has the same name.
Check what you are actually paying for
When using a booking page, confirm the service, vehicle category, appointment and final amount before entering payment details. GOV.UK warns that unofficial sites usually charge more. A search advertisement or official-looking design does not make a website the government booking service.
Keep the government confirmation separately from your tuition receipt. If you later query a charge, identify the transaction first: an examination booking, a school payment and a third-party service are not the same purchase.
Finally, compare costs alongside readiness. Choosing an earlier appointment merely to avoid another lesson can be a false economy if the underlying skills are not dependable. Ask for a clear progress discussion and use our theory study plan where useful. A realistic budget explains what is included, what is uncertain and what a change would cost, without promising the cheapest route will be the right one for every learner.
