Driving Schools Near Me: How to Choose the Right One
Choosing a driving school near you? The 10-point checklist: ADI grades, prices, cancellation terms, reviews — and the questions to ask first.

Search "driving schools near me" and you'll get a wall of options: national franchises, local independents, aggregator sites, and instructors advertising on social media. The difference between a good choice and a bad one isn't luck — it's knowing what to check before you hand over money. This is the checklist a driving instructor would want you to use.
1. Check the instructor is properly qualified
In the UK there are two legal statuses for someone charging for driving instruction:
- ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) — fully qualified, holds a green badge displayed in the windscreen. Passed the three-part qualifying exams and is on the DVSA register.
- PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) — a trainee working towards qualification, holds a pink badge. Legal to charge for lessons, but mid-training.
Neither is automatically good or bad, but you should know which you're getting, and a trainee's price should usually reflect their status. Ask directly: "Are you a fully qualified ADI?" A genuine instructor answers without hesitation. Our instructors page shows how Learn and Drive vets the instructors on its platform.
2. Look at the price — and what it includes
Local lesson prices vary, but the DVSA's October 2025 instructor survey (published on GOV.UK) found the largest share of instructors charging £36–£40 per hour, with significant shares at £30–£35 and £41–£45. A price far below your area's range usually has a catch: a 50-minute "hour", a trainee instructor, or an introductory rate that rises after three lessons.
Ask what the hourly rate actually buys: lesson length in minutes, pickup and drop-off (door-to-door from home, work or college is standard with Learn and Drive), and whether the price includes the same car every time. Check current Manchester prices as a reference point.
3. Read the cancellation and refund terms
This is where cheap deals quietly become expensive. Before booking:
- How much notice is required to cancel a lesson without charge? 24–48 hours is typical; same-day cancellation usually costs the full lesson fee.
- What happens to prepaid blocks if you stop, move, or want to change instructor? Look for written terms, not verbal promises.
- Test-day car hire: what does the instructor charge for the test itself, and what notice do they need to move it? (This is separate from the DVSA's own change rules.)
Get the terms in writing or on the website before you pay for a block. Our FAQ covers Learn and Drive's terms.
4. Manual or automatic — decide deliberately
Many schools offer both; some specialise. An automatic-only licence restricts you to automatics (code 78 on the licence), which matters if you might ever need to drive a manual — though for many learners that's never an issue. Automatics can mean fewer lessons for some learners since there's no clutch and gear work to master, which offsets any small price premium. Weigh the decision properly with our manual vs automatic guide.
5. Ask about the car and the area
- The car: dual controls (legally required for instruction), reasonable condition, and the same car for every lesson and the test. Practising manoeuvres in one car and testing in another is an avoidable handicap.
- The area: does the instructor teach around your test centre? An instructor who knows the roads around, say, West Didsbury or Cheetham Hill test centres can prepare you for their specific layouts. Check which areas a school actually covers — our areas we cover page lists Manchester service areas honestly.
6. Read reviews the right way
Reviews are useful if you read them critically:
- Look for patterns across many reviews, not one glowing or furious outlier.
- Specific reviews beat generic ones. "Passed first time after 30 hours, instructor was calm when I messed up roundabouts" tells you more than "great instructor!!".
- Be wary of schools with only five-star reviews and no detail — and equally wary of review profiles that only exist on the school's own website. Independent platforms are harder to game.
- Check how the school responds to negative reviews. A professional response to a complaint says more about a business than a hundred five-stars.
7. The first lesson is the real test
No checklist replaces sitting in the car. After one or two lessons, ask yourself:
- Does the instructor explain why, not just what? ("Check the mirror because…" beats "check the mirror.")
- Do you get a clear plan — what you're working on, what comes next?
- Is feedback specific and calm, or vague and sharp?
- Does the lesson feel structured, with a briefing and a debrief, or like an expensive drive?
A good instructor teaches you to think like a driver, not just to pass a test. If the fit is wrong, change early — it's far cheaper than 30 lessons with the wrong person.
8. Practical questions to ask before you book
- Are you a fully qualified ADI (green badge) or a trainee (pink badge)?
- What's the hourly rate, and how long is a lesson in minutes?
- Do you do door-to-door pickup from my address?
- Manual, automatic, or both — and do you have female instructors available? (Learn and Drive does, on request.)
- What's your cancellation policy and your block-booking refund policy?
- Which test centres do you usually prepare pupils for?
- What do you charge for the car on test day?
Any school that answers these clearly and in writing is a school worth considering. Evasiveness on price or terms is the clearest red flag there is.
The Manchester option

Frequently asked questions
What should I look for in a driving school near me? A fully qualified ADI (green badge), transparent pricing with written cancellation and refund terms, the same car for lessons and test, instructors who teach around your likely test centre, and specific, verifiable reviews.
How do I check if a driving instructor is qualified? Ask whether they're an ADI or a PDI trainee, and look for the green (qualified) or pink (trainee) badge in the windscreen. The DVSA also maintains a register of approved instructors.
Should I choose a national driving school or a local independent? Both can be excellent. Nationals offer standardised booking systems and coverage; independents often offer consistency (one instructor throughout) and local knowledge. Judge the individual instructor and the terms, not the brand size.
Is the cheapest driving school a good deal? Not always. Prices far below the local range often mean shorter "hours", trainee instructors, or introductory rates that rise. The cheapest route to a licence is usually the instructor who gets you test-ready in the fewest total hours, not the lowest hourly rate.
Can I change driving instructor if I'm not happy? Yes, at any time. Your progress belongs to you — a new instructor will assess your level and continue from there. It's cheaper to change after two lessons than to persist for twenty.
Do driving schools offer female instructors? Many do, including Learn and Drive on request. If it matters to you, ask when booking — it's a normal request and schools are used to it.
